The English run ends after 104 episodes with Japanese episode 124: おきみやげ (Parting Gift) which is called "Double Trouble" in the English run.
TRIVIA:
Initially, only 52 episodes of the show were planned to be produced in English by NBC, but Mushi Productions insisted on another 52 episodes being sold to NBC and dubbed, with Mushi Productions even threatening to sell the show to a different company if NBC refused to buy. Ultimately, NBC picked up another 52 episodes on the condition that Mushi Productions not sell the show to anybody else.
When dubbing the show, NBC commissioned Don Rockwell to write English lyrics for the theme song, since the Japanese version at the time only had an instrumental. They did this without the knowledge of Mushi Productions, but Mushi Pro seemed happy with these changes. Japanese Lyrics would be added to the Japanese airing of the show starting on July 30th 1963 with Episode 31, which is approximately a month before the English run began airing on the 7th of September that same year.
Not only did the English run end after only 104 episodes, but several episodes were skipped and never dubbed for various reasons. One infamous example being the "Hot Dog Corps" episode, being undubbed because the plot featured dogs having their consciousnesses placed in robotic soldiers and having their unconscious bodies placed in cold storage. The plot was a lot more tame compared to the manga, which had dogs being skinned for their pelts after having their actual brains placed into the robots. Still, this wasn't enough for NBC, who claimed the plot was "too cruel" to air. Tezuka would later call this "hypocritical" in a republication of the Astro Boy manga chapter the story of the episode is derived from, saying Americans kill and eat animals in excessively cruel ways. An illustration of a hogtied pig with an apple in its mouth was shown as an example of this.
The episodes were dubbed and aired out of order in the English run, leading to odd inconsistencies, such as the appearance of Astro Boy's sister, Astro Girl, in episode 17 of the English run before her official introduction in Episode 25.
