Expedition to Mars
In the year 2080, Astro Boy becomes the commander of the second Mars expedition, and comes into conflict with Captain Daring, who is dissatisfied with this. The rocket takes off with Captain Minder's daughter, Julip, whose brother was left behind on Mars.
The original manga, "Captain Mars," ran in the April-May 1954 issues of the monthly Shonen magazine. It was retitled "Adventure on Mars" in the first A5-sized volume, published June 1956 (the kanji for 'exploration' differs slightly in the anime).
Screenplay/Direction: Tezuka Osamu
Key animation: Sugii Gisaburo, Ishii Motoaki, Sakamoto Yusaku, and others
Astro Boy: Billie Lou Watt
Professor Elefun: Ray Owens
The cover of the second Kabba Comics volume (February 1964) features a colorized, recomposed cel from the anime's production.
In the manga, Captain Rencorn, left behind on Mars, built a robot army to defend against future alien invaders. The anime depicts him building a single, large robot tank.
A 3-minute, 30-second segment from episode 3 was reused in episode 53, "Goodbye 1963" (aired December 31, 1963), as Atom shares memories with Uran-chan after she finds a photo of Captain Mars.
In the original, Julip is Captain Minder's sister. In the dub, the relationship is changed to that of a father and daughter.
