The Birth of Astro Boy
Dr. Boynton of the Ministry of Science launches a new project to create a new son after Astor Boynton III, his biological son, passes away. After completing his new son, he names him "Astro Boy". Later, he learns of a mistake in his design which doesn't allow Astro Boy to grow, and he sells the robot to the circus in a fit of rage.
The original manga featuring Astro Boy's origin story appeared in the July 1951 issue of Shonen magazine in Japan and the beginning of the first A5 Tetsuwan Atom volume (June 1956).

The original Japanese manga's Robot Circus leader is a man named Monsieur Ampere, while the anime uses a different character from the series: Caccitore.
Tobio's birthday in the original manga was vague, but the Tetsuwan Atom Club (March 1965) gave two dates: 2003 (a year after his accident) and April 1, 2014. The Shonen magazine's November 1966 special edition lists April 7, 2003. However, the anime's first episode shows Tobio's transfer certificate as April 1, 2001, suggesting a 2000 birth year. The English dub, however, states the year 2000 in narration that was added at the beginning. Which would make Astro Boy's birth year 2001.
