On a mission to capture the wanted criminal Pepel, Atom's lunar voyage aboard the spaceship Titan was cut short by a catastrophic meteorite collision. The six passengers – Atom, Pepel, Marble, Kuramochi, Mrs. Taniel, and Mike – managed to escape in an escape pod, but their journey ended abruptly when they crash land on an asteroid.
The original manga, initially titled "The Secret Behind the Moon," ran as a serial in the January-March 1959 issues of Shonen magazine. Later, it was retitled "Ivan the Fool" in the eighth volume of the A5-sized book published in July 1960.
