The original manga, "Black-Loox (ブラック・ルックス)", was a one-shot story in the September 1957 issue of Shonen magazine. It was later included in the sixth volume of the A5 Tankobon released in September 1959.

The manga uses a hyphenated title ("Black-Loox"), while the anime omits it.
The manga features Atom, Higeoyaji, and Atom's parents visiting Penguin Land in Antarctica, then Victoria Falls in Cape Town, South Africa, to meet Dr. Gamma. The anime focuses on the Icebox ice palace in Penguin Land and Mount Aurora, the Black Loox' base.
This episode, made with a very limited number of frames, was remade as episode 7, "Cape Town Lullaby."
