One of the escaped convicts takes Dr. Ochanomizu, who was there for a robot inspection, hostage and used parts from Astro Boy to finish building Pook, a transforming robot...
The original manga, "Cross Continent" (少年), ran in the monthly Shonen magazine, starting as a supplement in the January 1958 issue and continuing through the April issue. It was later retitled "Cross Island" in the seventh volume, an A5 paperback released in December 1959.

The manga features HamEgg, and Acetylene Lamp escaping with Dr. Tozawa. The only other person on the continent was Higeoyaji, a robot school teacher. The Kinsankaku, an international conspiracy group, attacks to steal the continent's uranium.
In the anime adaptation, Teka and Chibi escape with Dr. Tozawa, and the inhabitant of Cross Island is Dr. Ochanomizu, inspecting robots.
In the manga, Dr. Tozawa, a robotics expert, completes the unfinished transforming robot, Pook, using Atom's parts. However, he's critically wounded by Lamp, who double-crossed him, and dies repairing Atom as he passes away.
